Middle School Curriculum Booklet 25-27
General Courses
As well as embarking upon a programme of study leading to I/GCSE qualifications, pupils also take part in activities within the curriculum which support their development as individual learners and their progression to being happy and healthy adults.
Foundations The Foundations programme, delivered through weekly sessions, is designed to equip pupils with a range of academic and broad skills which prepare them for life in the Sixth Form and beyond. It covers topics relating to Personal, Social, Health and Economic education and the development of excellent study skills, through a range of in-class activities and presentations by visiting speakers.
The course actively promotes the development of research and oracy skills through study for an English Speaking Board qualification.
Games All pupils in Senior 10 and Senior 11 will take part in a weekly Games afternoon to support and foster a positive attitude towards health and fitness which extends into adult life. A variety of options are on offer, depending on the season. These will encompass competitive sport and fixtures, as well as a range of activities which promote personal fitness and enjoyment. There is something for everyone. ESB Level 2 Certificate in Speech (Grade 5) (5B: Presentation): Offered by the English Speaking Board, this qualification promotes independent research and allows pupils to topics of their choice, outside the scope of their studies. There are 3 sections to prepare for. Pupils must prepare a 5 minute presentation on a contemporary issue which discusses different viewpoints, a 3 minute review of a published text including a brief memorised extract, and a 5 minute analysis of a real life speech. They will be assessed by an external examiner in small groups of 8 and will also be assessed on how well they listen and ask questions in their assessment session. Along with research skills, this is an excellent opportunity for pupils to develop confidence in presenting their ideas, demonstrate intellectual imagination and broaden their worldview.
