UVI ARTISTS AT WORK Drawing inspiration from the distortion techniques of artists such as Pablo Picasso, Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud, Art Scholar Lexi Crisp has been trialling her own different approaches to the distorted portrait, in both two and three dimensions, documenting her practice in her portfolio along the way.

machine in our Innovation Centre to use a traditional

‘feminine’ technique to convey a message of Black Lives Matter. Inspired by installation artist Olaflur Eliasson, May Shin has been using resin to reproduce light and colour. We are so proud of their work to date and we look forward to seeing their final outcomes at the year’s end. Mrs Ilaria Harris, Teacher of Art

INKTOBER During the month of October, the School of Art ran an ‘Inktober’ House Drawing competition. This produced a host of impressive entries amongst a whopping 1,809 submissions. Pupils were asked to make pen and ink drawings in response to a different daily word stimulus. The judges were delighted with the evidence of enthusiasm and creativity shown and hope those who participated and enjoyed the project will to continue to draw on a regular basis. Montefiore was adjudged ‘Top Draw’ House, with Brearley placed second and Findlay third. Thank you to Miss Hemming, who diligently sorted through the entries to create a display of the best of these in the Sports Hall Foyer at the end of the competition.

ART AND NATURE

Who doesn’t have a favourite place, garden or park? Although London is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city, it is also full of the breathtaking beauty of nature. Mrs Harris’ Senior 7 pupils were asked to take a closer look at nature and make plans to recreate their favourite natural spot ‘in a jar’. Is such a thing possible? Our young artists brought such imagination to the task that the judges, LVI Art Scholars Cassius Ashcroft and James Cutler, found it extremely difficult to choose the three winners! In the end, with many congratulations, the awards went to Ava Thomas, Augustin Rallon and William Beale. Well done to all who took part and thanks to Mrs Harris for organising such a creative artistic opportunity.
