Tom has previously been commissioned to create sculptures for Kew Gardens, RHS Garden Wisley and Wakehurst Place, with a focus on natural forms and sustainability. Tom started the three-day workshop by introducing the pupils to his work and the material itself. They were taught a traditional basket weaving technique and experimented with using several types of willow, familiarising themselves with the subtle differences in colour and malleability. Once they had a feel for the willow, they began working on the five-piece armature that Tom had designed and welded, to be installed on the side of the Art Department. On Day Two, Tom introduced the pupils to a more contemporary weaving technique, allowing for a looser, more expressive weave. Each pupil made their own willow sphere to practise, before working this technique into the sculpture as well. By Day Three, the sculpture was complete and ready to be installed. Four LVI pupils worked together with Tom to secure the sculpture on the side of the Art building, where it will stay for many years to come. A big thank you goes to Tom Hare for running a fantastic workshop, and to Ms Elmore for organising the event. It was enjoyed by all and gave the pupils a wonderful insight into the process of design and craft from a practising artist, as well as a brilliant opportunity to spend three days working with their hands, which is such an important and enriching activity. All these people are our heroes and a recent competition organised by Royal Mail aimed to honour them by producing a set of eight stamps featuring designs created by eight school-aged children.
