HOUSE CHESS COMPETITION The House Chess Competition reflected the enthusiasm pupils have towards their House and their abilities in strategy and thought-provoking competition. Matches were played in M4 and M5 during lunchtimes and administrated and supported by the Heads of House, Dr Hazell, LVI volunteers and Mr Matar, who runs Chess Club. Each day saw a different year group play and boards and pieces were sanitized after each game. Once all matches were played, the pupils with the most wins for each House then played each other to decide the Best in Year. Congratulations to: Sam Badawi, S7, Grigory Matveev, S8, Matthew Croston, S9, Rishabh Madhok, S10 and – best in PVI/VI and overall House Chess Champion of 2021 - Rodion Radoslavov, LVI. Certificates were presented to the winners and the House with the most points was Brearley House. PUPILS TEACH GERMAN IN THE PREP SCHOOL Five pupils in LVI studying German planned and delivered some fantastic German lessons to pupils in the Prep School. The activities involved a play the LVI pupils wrote about ‘Superkatze’ (Supercat) and a magic hat, a game of bingo on the names of animals in German and a dance to learn the numbers from 1-10. Well done Georgie Hughes, Vivian Kang, Tom Moutafov, Arthur Mellor and Alex Mortimer for their hard work in devising the lessons and for their enthusiasm in their interactions with the younger pupils. Thank you also to Mrs Walls for giving them the opportunity, and to Ms Francis for her guidance. Mr Oliver Williams, Teacher of German

LINGUIST TRIO’S SUCCESS

We are thrilled to report that in Lancaster University’s Modern Languages in Schools Prize, Ella Peters, LVI was awarded ‘Spanish Language Winner’ and ‘Overall Runner Up’ in all the languages represented. Employing her own considerable linguistic skills, Alex Mortimer won the accolade of Runner Up in the Years 12-13 category of the University of Oxford’s German network Olympiad for her informative booklet on glacier melting, "Gletscherschmelze". A number of Senior 9 and LVI pupils dedicated some of their free time during lockdown to enter the French Flash Fiction Competition, organised by the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages at the University of Oxford. Entrants to the competition were tasked with writing a short story of no more than 100 words in French. There was a brilliant response, with entries coming in from across the UK and beyond, and in total there were more than 600 submissions. The judges were very impressed with the quality of the entries. In the Years 12-13 category, Charles Blagburn, LVI received a commendation for his ‘Le Rat et la Chauve-souris’. His work portrayed an encounter and conversation between a rat and a bat. Charles cleverly related his fiction to the pandemic and used a writing style not dissimilar to the style of Jean de la Fontaine. The Modern Languages Faculty would like to congratulate Charles and all the pupils who entered this prestigious competition. Félicitations et bravo! Mr Stanislaus Le Pocréau, Head of French [Both Alex and Ella enjoyed more success in the New College of the Humanities English Essay Competition 2021. Their essays, along with those of LVIs Cassius Ashcroft, Emma Braithwaite, Harry Brusarosco, Frederick Crowther, Toby Grose, Fredrik Lidstrom, Matthew Mason, Caleb Mathieson and Electra Vaitsas, were shortlisted by the judges from over 6,000 entries. Alex was subsequently selected as a finalist, an outstanding achievement. – Ed.]
