Sixth Form Handbook 2022-24

HISTORY OF ART

Course content and structure Pupils develop a critical understanding of works of art, placing them firmly in the context in which they are found. We focus our study on painting, sculpture and architecture. The course considers the development and significance of the traditions of Western Art and also extends to works beyond the European tradition. We cover how works of art are made, their style, function and historical context across a chronologically wide-ranging content. The study of art in its historical and contemporary forms gives candidates crucial knowledge of world civilisations. It fosters visual and analytical skills that can be applied in many walks of life, and facilitates the tools to understand how images and objects work to shape our social and political identities. This specification allows pupils to develop particular strengths and interests, inspiring lifelong learning. Candidates are encouraged to research and investigate art through first-hand experience by exploiting fully the many gallery and museum facilities we benefit from in London (the course will involve visits to museums and galleries as well as on-site study abroad). This subject enriches other studies, especially Art, History and English Literature but also sits well alongside a more STEM-focused portfolio.

Assessment overview Pupils will follow a linear A-Level course, with final assessment in UVI only. Two 3-hour papers will be taken in June of UVI: Paper 1 covers Visual Analysis (Painting, Sculpture and Architecture) and two Themes (Identities and Nature). Paper 2 covers two Historical Periods (Renaissance and European Modernism). Both short-answer and longer essay questions are required. Assessment objectives Candidates will be assessed on their ability to analyse works of art, place them in their historical and cultural context, form cohesive arguments, make academic judgements, incorporate critical texts and use technical language.

University and careers links This is a rigorous academic subject of long standing and, as such, is considered in a similar way to other essay subjects such as English Literature and History. Pupils will have to master a technical vocabulary and learn to write cogently and convincingly to gain the highest grade. The A-Level course prepares pupils to undertake degree studies in History of Art, History, Architecture and related subjects, as well as arts- related and other careers.
