Sixth Form Handbook 2022-24

PHYSICS

Course content and structure Physics helps you to understand the fundamental laws that describe and explain our universe. Studying Physics at this level can enable you to gain access to a wide range of degrees and will develop proficiency in problem solving, analysing and interpreting data, as well as fostering practical skills. The history of many key developments in our understanding of Physics is explained and you will discover how theories governing our universe have developed. You will also learn the physics behind many common appliances and instruments used in industry and at home. In the modern world, an understanding of Physics empowers you to form educated opinions about current issues such as climate change, alternative energy, nuclear power and treatment of nuclear waste. Assessment overview The A-Level material is covered as a two-year linear course designed to highlight connections between the topics and to reinforce and extend learning. All of the unit papers will be sat in June of the UVI year. Practical skills are developed throughout the course and assessed as part of the written papers.

The assessment takes the form of three 2-hour papers:

Paper 1: Particles and Quantum Phenomena, Mechanics, Waves, Electricity and Periodic Motion

Paper 2: Fields, Further Mechanics, Nuclear Physics and Thermal Physics

Paper 3: Practical Skills and Astrophysics

University and careers links Apart from Physics and Engineering degrees, A-Level Physics can be useful for other Science-based degrees, such as Medicine, and also non-Science courses such as Economics and Geography, which value the analytical nature of Physics. The analytical skills gained on the course make it a useful choice for a huge range of careers, from Engineering to Finance. Physics graduates are in great demand in both research and business.
