Environmental Sciences
Two of the following are usually essential: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Geography.
Modern Languages
For French, German, Spanish or Hispanic studies, an A-Level in the language is normally required. For new languages at degree level (such as Arabic or Russian) study of at least one other modern language to A-Level is normally required, but not essential. Music is usually essential and an essay-based subject can be helpful such as English, History, History of Art or Politics. Some courses require certain standards with instruments, even specifying Grade 5 piano. At least two Sciences/Mathematics studied to A-Level. Check individual colleges for their requirements which vary considerably One of the following is usually essential: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics. Psychology could be useful. Chemistry is usually essential and one of Biology, Mathematics or Physics may also be. Usually there are no essential subjects but the following could be helpful: Religious Studies, Classical Civilisation and Mathematics. Physics is essential, and Mathematics is considered to be near-indispensable. Further Mathematics and/or Chemistry could be helpful. Usually there are no essential subjects but useful subjects include the following: Classical Civilisation, Business, Economics, English, History, Religious Studies and Politics. There are no specific requirements but some combination from History, Politics, Economics, Mathematics and Religious Studies would be helpful. One of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics may be essential and, of course, Psychology would be helpful. Usually there are no essential subjects but one or more of the following could be helpful: Classical Civilisation, English, History and Religious Studies. Usually there are no essential subjects but one or more of the following could be helpful: Classical Civilisation, Politics, Geography and Psychology. One of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics or Sports/Physical Education may be essential while Psychology would be helpful. Taking Chemistry and Biology and either Mathematics or Physics should keep all universities offering this course open to you. There may also be admissions tests, such as the Biomedical Admission Test (BMAT), so check entry requirements carefully.

Mathematics is essential.
French
French is usually essential and a second language can be helpful as can English, History and Politics. Geography is essential and some courses also like one of the following: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics. Two of the following are usually essential: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Geography could also be useful. German is usually essential and a second language can be helpful as can English, History and Politics. History is essential. Other, useful subjects include Classical Civilisation, Economics, English, Politics and Religious Studies. History of Art is not required but would be an advantage. Other, useful subjects include English and History. Usually there are no essential subjects but some will ask for English. Useful subjects include: Classical Civilisation, Geography, History, Politics and Religious Studies. Useful subjects include Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, English, Modern and Classical Languages. Mathematics is often essential and Business or Economics can be helpful. Mathematics is essential and Further Mathematics can be for the more competitive courses. Physics can help. Mathematics is essential and usually with Physics. Further Mathematics can be an advantage. If you do Chemistry, Biology and one from Mathematics or Physics you will keep all the medical schools open to you. If you do Chemistry and Biology, you will keep open the vast majority. If you do Chemistry and one from Mathematics and Physics, you will significantly reduce your range of choices. Alongside good grades in the right subjects, some Medicine courses use admissions tests such as the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) and the Biomedical Admissions Test (BMAT). Check specific entry requirements carefully.
