Introducing Ibstock Festival 2023 This year, the Ibstock Festival brings together an exciting programme of talks, trips, workshops, sports activities, and performances, both on and off site. It is a wonderful opportunity to extend learning beyond the classroom, have fun with friends and try something new. In the following pages you’ll find the activities available for your year group. From Paint-balling to Pottery and 'The Great Ibstock Bake-Off’ to ‘It’s a Knockout’, there is something for everyone. For our Upper Sixth leavers and alumni there is also the annual Stocks BBQ on Saturday 1 July. A relaxed afternoon of music and games in The Orchard, it is always a joyous event and an opportunity to connect with our wonderful alumni community.

Ibstock in Paris

All Senior 7 pupils will enjoy a five-day residential trip to Paris. They will be staying in the glorious Château de Grande Romaine, which has superb grounds, offering a range of outdoor activities for them to enjoy. More information on the accommodation can be found here:

The itinerary will include visits to iconic monuments of Paris: the Eiffel Tower, the Sacré Coeur, La Butte de Montmartre, le Château de Fontainebleau, plus a cruise down the Seine on a bateau mouche and a little bit of shopping in the local market and hypermarket! There will also be a morning of adventure activities in the grounds of the Château de Grande Romaine.

At the Dystopia Showcase, to which parents will be invited, pupils will display artefacts, art and writing inspired by their dystopian worlds. You will have the chance to view the exhibition, hear extracts from the finalists and discover the winner of this year’s Ibstock Senior 8 Fiction Prize.

Ian B Dunne, often known as the Professor and the Science Stand-Up, will be presenting a show to Senior 8. He is a Chemist, a lapsed pyrotechnician, a qualified teacher, an author and more importantly, he has 5 million pounds of public liability insurance (with a no claims discount). You can find Ian on his website and on Facebook where he posts interesting science stuff every day.

This is your opportunity to get trained in the art of self-defence by the experts. Defence Lab is a no nonsense, reality based self-defence system that has featured in such blockbuster movies as Batman Begins and The Dark Knight with Christian Bale, and Mission Impossible 3 and Jack Reacher with Tom Cruise. The training is not just physical, but mental and psychological too. You will not only have a lot of fun, with a lot of action, but you will also walk away feeling more confident and empowered.

Strategy games aren’t just for Christmas! From Whist, Blackjack and Rummy to a variety of board games designed to test your skills and cunning, this session aims to teach you the basics of these iconic games and then build your skills, develop your tactics and master the strategies!

Chessington Visit

OnWednesday 21st June, all Senior 8 pupils will be spending the day at Chessington World of Adventures. As well as the opportunity to let off steam and enjoy some exhilarating rides, Chessington Zoo is home to over 1,000 animals, including lions, tigers, gorillas, monkeys and penguins. You will each participate in a science related workshop run by the Ranger team. These will include looking at the physics behind making the forces and engineering involved in the rollercoasters work or the biological classification of animals, their adaptation for different habitats, the importance of biodiversity and analysis of different ecosystems. It promises to a be a fun-filled and thought-provoking day!

In teams, you’ll compete to make the best showstopper, the winners of which will be crowned Bake-Off champions. Summer is upon us! The season of the Great British Barbecue doesn’t have to be a sorry tale of charred bangers and raw-in-the-middle chicken. Finessing your barbecuing skills under the expert eye of our own Executive Chef, Mr Josh Stevens. Choose from a menu of 28-day-matured beef, halloumi, prawns and other mouth-watering ingredients to fashion your own two-course meal and then cook it to perfection on our barbecues. All tastes and requirements catered for!

Design and build the strongest, longest and most elegant bridge and failure test it with weights.

Grab your kilt and your partner, a ceilidh is reeling its way to Ibstock! You will need to practice your dosey-does and barn dances for this activity. This two-hour tutorial will have you spinning around and learning traditional Scottish country dancing. All you need is enthusiasm and the ability to count to 8! So, put on your dancing shoes and “gie it laldy!”

In addition to learning the art of using specialist inks, you’ll get to turn your unique designs into hand-made crafts. Relax with a soothing pebble-painting session – from neon mandalas to pearlescent galaxies, there is a style for everyone! Mandalas have been used as meditation aids for centuries, and ‘The Kindness Rocks Project’ spreads sunshine by leaving painted pebbles for people to enjoy. Circus skills! The perfect way to realise a hidden talent you never knew you had! The ultimate party tricks and ways to learn brilliant teamwork, improve coordination and open doors to a range of possibilities. At the start of the morning pupils will watch a demonstration performed by the talented practitioners from Berzerkez Circus. By the end of the three-hour workshop pupils will be able to showcase their very own combination of circus skills. This is your opportunity to take different types of writing for a spin and see which, if any, might go the distance. You will meet award-winning writers at the top of their game who will give you the insider’s guide to their area of expertise and guide you through developing your own skill in this area. The day will start with a talk in the theatre by Comedy YA writer Simon James Green, who will provide an insider’s guide to becoming a writer, from the initial idea to working with an editor and promoting the book after publication. This is a call for the Good Samaritan in you – can you make somebody’s day fun and special? You will be involved in the planning of and delivering of an entertainment schedule (including a quiz, music performance, raffle draw, refreshments) for around 30 elderly guests from nearby sheltered housing accommodation. You will need to bring your most charming chat, and your ability to get stuck in, and to work successfully as a team, in order to make the event a memorable one for our guests.

Step back in time to the days of innovation, determination and record breaking on the site of the world’s first purpose-built racetrack. Discover supersonic flight with Concorde and get up close to the aircraft designed, built and flown at Brooklands. Explore the historic site brought to life through interactive collections of motor vehicles, aircraft and real-life experiences and create your own propeller powered car to race on the historic finishing straight of this famous racetrack.

This is your opportunity to get trained in the art of self-defence by the experts. Defence Lab is a no nonsense, reality based self defence system that has featured in such blockbuster movies as Batman Begins and The Dark Knight with Christian Bale, and Mission Impossible 3 and Jack Reacher with Tom Cruise. The training is not just physical, but mental and psychological too. You will not only have a lot of fun, with a lot of action, but you will also walk away feeling much more confident and empowered.

Personal Statement Masterclass

Oxford Trip

Date: Friday 23 June Time: All day

The city of dreaming spires... seat of scholars for 800 years... Oxford houses Britain's oldest university, botanical gardens, and pubs. It has more quadrangles, gothic spires and listed buildings than you can shake a gown at. You will get to enjoy the classic Oxford experience of punting on the River Cherwell as well as visiting the Ashmolean – one of the finest museums in Britain – and exploring the culinary wonderland that is the world famous Oxford covered market at lunchtime!

In the morning Ms Hemmings and Dr Hazell will deliver a session on how to craft the perfect UCAS Personal Statement, jam packed with lots of top tips and useful examples of successful past statements. In the afternoon, pupils will move into smaller groups to work with Sixth Form Tutors on crafting a unique statement tailored to their own ambitions. By the end of the day pupils will have a clear idea of what they need to do over summer to ensure they have a storming first draft come the autumn term. It's a Knockout!

Packed with all kinds of games and inflatable challenges, It’s a Knockout is a competitive event full of teamwork, camaraderie, laughter (and quite possibly some cheating). We will start with an uplifting warm-up dance led by instructors. Once the blood is flowing, it’s straight on with the challenges which include the bungee run, gladiator joust, wacky races, inflatable horsey hoppers, giant inflatable assault course, the inflatable wet wall, and our famous giant inflatable washing machines.

Pottery Workshop Day 1: Spinning Time: 11:00am - 1:00pm, 2:00pm - 4:00pm Led by: Miss Hunter Location: School of Art Spend two days gaining experience in a variety of pottery techniques - including coiling, slab-building and throwing on the wheel. Pieces will be fired in our kiln and you will then spend a day decorating your work whilst learning more about the possibilities of glazes. Day one will be spent learning about key materials and equipment used in ceramics, before having a hands-on session making coiled sculptures, slab-built lanterns and a set of three mugs on the pottery wheel. Anything made during the workshop can be taken home afterwards.

Climbing is exhilarating and sociable – an extreme sport in a comfortable environment. It promises to be an ultimate post-exams stressbuster.

Join the School of Art for a day of life drawing (sometimes known as figure drawing), the specialist skill of drawing people who are present in front of you in the art studio, usually posing without clothing. One of the purposes of life drawing is to gain an appreciation of anatomical proportions, and to be able to replicate them faithfully on the page.
